Firearms retailers are being encouraged to ensure customers are aware of updated notification requirements linked to night shooting activities under the CL55 licence.
The changes relate to Condition 7 of CL55, the licence covering the shooting of deer at night, and introduce new responsibilities for those carrying out lawful night shooting operations.
Under the revised condition, anyone operating under the licence must inform both the local police and the relevant firearms licensing authority at least 24 hours before undertaking night shooting for the first time at a location.
Users are also required to notify neighbouring landowners or occupiers in advance where it is reasonable to believe adjoining land may be affected or disturbed by the activity.
The updated guidance is intended to improve communication and reduce the potential for concern associated with lawful night shooting.
For retailers, the changes present an opportunity to help customers remain compliant, particularly those purchasing thermal optics, night vision equipment or pest control accessories commonly associated with after-dark shooting activities.
The update also serves as a reminder of the increasing importance of clear communication and responsible conduct within modern wildlife and pest management operations.
Customers operating under CL55 are advised to review their existing procedures and ensure all relevant notifications are made before commencing night shooting activities.
