Lamberts of Ringwood, a respected retail establishment in the heart of Ringwood’s Market Place in Hampshire, has announced its closure, ending over a century of service to the area’s shooting community.
Since the 1990s, Malcolm Lambert has ran the shop, developing its legacy and ensuring its position as a mainstay in the local area. Now, at 78, Lambert is set to retire, leading to the closing of this iconic shop.
Originally known as R.Balanton Gunsmiths from 1916, the shop underwent several name changes and ownerships before Lambert took charge, renaming it in honour of his friendship with Tony Wiltshire. The passing of Wiltshire in 2011 marked a significant moment for both Lambert and the shop.
The shop has long been more than a commercial enterprise; it has been a community hub, with Lambert and his staff—Linda, Hayley and Ben—building lasting relationships with their clientele. The sense of loss among the shop’s customers is substantial, with many expressing their regret and nostalgia for the end of an era, especially those who valued the personal service and expertise offered by Lamberts of Ringwood.
After a closing down sale, there are now plans for the future. Ben, the shop’s gunsmith, is looking to embark on a new venture within the industry, whilst Lambert himself is exploring opportunities in property development. Yet, now that Lamberts of Ringwood ceased operations on Tuesday 30 April, a chapter has closed in Ringwood’s history, leaving behind a legacy of community, craftsmanship and tradition.
The Lamberts of Ringwood team commented: “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we inform you we will be closing our door for good at the end of April. After 30 years of owning the shop Malcolm Lambert has decided to retire. We would like to thank our loyal customers and suppliers for their support over the years and also our dedicated team of staff – we are grateful to you all. For those of you who have items in storage or on a commission sale we are pleased to let you know that Ben our gunroom manager of eight years will continue to offer these services from a new premises locally – New Forest Country Sports.”
