London gunmaker John Rigby & Co. has announced the appointment of Tom Allen as engraving apprentice, as part of its training programme, the Rigby Academy.
Tom, who joined the team in December, brings with him a passion for artistry and a dedication to fine craftsmanship.
Hailing from Hemel Hempstead, 24-year-old Tom initially pursued a career in music, before transitioning to jewellery making and silversmithing. After discovering his niche in engraving, this led Tom to the Rigby Academy.
Tom’s introduction to Rigby began with a fortuitous encounter at a workshop engraving event hosted by the Hand Engravers Association in London. “Before, I’d heard little bits about the company, but not an awful lot,” Tom recalled. “I came along, met everyone, and had a tour, and things progressed from there. I was wowed by the top end talent producing exceptional guns,” said Tom. “I like making stuff with my hands. I’ve gone from playing music to realising I wanted to make something physical.”
As part of the Rigby Academy, Tom is poised to delve into the intricacies of gun engraving under the mentorship of Rigby engraver, Saija Koskialho. “I’ve learned so much in a short space of time. Currently, I’m working on more design aspects and honing my engraving skills on practice plates, to get comfortable with using the tools, but I’m improving every day.”
Marc Newton, managing director of John Rigby & Co., expressed his enthusiasm for Tom’s appointment, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Tom to our team at Rigby. His enthusiasm and passion for the role is encouraging to see. We’re delighted to watch Tom’s skills grow, along with his confidence each day.”
Tom’s appointment underscores Rigby’s dedication to nurturing talent and preserving the tradition of fine gunmaking for generations to come.
